Creator agency vs hiring creators directly: what you gain and what you risk

A side-by-side look at running creator outreach in-house, using a marketplace and working with a creator community, for AI teams preparing a launch.

Should an AI startup hire creators directly or use a creator agency?

Hiring directly gives the most control and works for a few creators the team already knows. It becomes hard when a launch needs many creators to publish in the same window. A creator-run community or agency adds existing relationships, vetting and coordination, so check whether it actually knows the creators or only resells a list.

Hiring creators directly

You choose every account, talk to each creator and keep the whole budget for fees. This works well for two or three people who already use your product. The cost is time: finding accounts, negotiating, sending product access, reviewing drafts and chasing publication dates, all during launch week.

The main risk is selection. From the outside it is hard to tell an engaged audience from inflated numbers, and cold messages from an unknown startup are often ignored by the creators you most want.

Marketplaces and broker agencies

Marketplaces and broker agencies offer reach quickly. Many, however, have no ongoing relationship with the creators they list. The agency sits between two parties who never talk, which recreates the one-off incentive problem: posts are delivered, nobody owns how the product is explained.

Ask a simple question: how many of these creators have you worked with more than once, and can they talk to us directly about the product? A vague answer is informative.

Creator-run communities

When the agency itself grew out of a community of creators, the relationships already exist. Creators know each other, briefs are written by people who post, and a coordinated release can happen without months of outreach. Feedback reaches the product team in creator language, before publication.

Check the same things as anywhere else: verifiable original posts, clear disclosure of paid partnerships, honest reporting that separates views from customers, and the freedom for creators to decline a product they do not believe in.
